New survey shows MRSA is major problem in nursing homes

02/07/2009
A new survey in nursing homes has revealed that one in four residents and seven per cent of staff are colonised with MRSA. The study took nose swabs from 1,111 residents and 553 staff in 45 nursing homes in Northern Ireland. Senior researchers at Queen’s University School of Pharmacy, Belfast have recommended: “two approaches to combat MRSA – improved education and staff training, and the use of creams and washes to eliminate MRSA from carriers.”
octenisan® antimicrobial hair and body wash has become an increasingly popular choice for skin decolonisation. More than 140 NHS Hospital Trusts are already using octenisan® and over 300,000 patients have benefited to date.
octenisan® is effective against a broad range of microorganisms but unlike some antimicrobial washes, its skin friendly formulation is gentle on the skin. The antimicrobial efficacy of octenisan® comes from the unique active ingredient octenidine, which has been shown to have a broad antimicrobial effect, including multi-resistant strains.
octenisan® is listed for purchase in the NHS Supply Chain Catalogue and online through NHS-Cat. With the order codes MRB423 (500ml) and MRB425 (150ml). Octenisan is available in 150ml and 500ml pack sizes and can be purchased from pharmacies or prescribed on FP10.
